Wayne Gretzky Short biography
Wayne Gretzky is widely considered one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time. Born in Brantford, Ontario, in 1961, Gretzky began playing hockey at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of junior hockey. He was drafted by the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1978, but his rights were later traded to the Edmonton Oilers. Gretzky made his NHL debut in 1979 at the age of 18 and quickly established himself as a superstar.
During his 20-year NHL career, Gretzky played for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers. He won four Stanley Cup championships, all with the Oilers, and holds or shares numerous NHL records, including most career goals (894), most career assists (1,963), and most career points (2,857). Gretzky was also a nine-time winner of the Hart Trophy, awarded to the NHL's most valuable player, and a four-time winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999.
