Albert Bourla Short biography
Albert Bourla is a Greek-American veterinarian and the chairman and chief executive officer of Pfizer, an American pharmaceutical company. He joined the company in 1993 and has held several executive roles across Pfizer's divisions. Prior to becoming chief executive officer, Bourla served as chief operating officer.
Bourla was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, and earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He began his career at Pfizer as a technical director for the company's animal health division in Greece. He later held various leadership roles in Pfizer's animal health and human health businesses. In 2018, he was appointed chief operating officer of Pfizer, and in 2019, he became chief executive officer.
Under Bourla's leadership, Pfizer has focused on research and development, and has brought several new products to market, including the blockbuster drug Ibrance for breast cancer and the COVID-19 vaccine Comirnaty. Bourla has also been an outspoken critic of government interference in pharmaceutical pricing.
