Michelle Obama Short biography
Michelle Obama is an American lawyer, writer, and the first African-American first lady of the United States. She was married to President Barack Obama from 1992 to 2017. As first lady, she launched several initiatives, including the Let's Move! campaign to combat childhood obesity, and Reach Higher to encourage young people to pursue higher education.
Obama was born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on January 17, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Princeton University with a degree in sociology in 1985 and Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctor in 1988. After law school, she worked as a corporate lawyer at Sidley Austin in Chicago.
In 1991, Michelle left Sidley Austin to become the executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, a national service organization for young adults. She later worked as the vice president for community and external affairs at the University of Chicago.
In 1996, Michelle met Barack Obama, a young community organizer and law professor. They were married in 1992 and have two daughters.
