Sam Walton Short biography
Sam Walton (March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992) was an American businessman and entrepreneur. He founded Walmart in 1962, which grew to be the world's largest corporation by revenue as well as the biggest private employer in the world. For some time, Walton was the richest person in the United States. His family has remained the richest family in the U.S. for several consecutive years.
Walton was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, and raised in Bentonville, Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in economics in 1940. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he returned to Arkansas and opened his first retail store, Walton's 5 & 10, in Bentonville in 1945. He opened his first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962.
Walton's business philosophy was based on low prices, a wide selection of merchandise, and convenient locations. He also pioneered the use of satellite technology to communicate with his stores and to track inventory. Walton's innovations helped to make Walmart the dominant force in the American retail industry.
