Michael Mann is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his stylized crime dramas, which often explore themes of obsession, betrayal, and morality. Mann's films have been praised for their realism, their visual style, and their strong performances.
Mann was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1943. He studied English literature at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and earned an M.A. from the London Film School in 1967. Mann began his career in the film industry as a commercial director and documentary filmmaker. He made his feature film debut in 1981 with the crime thriller Thief.
Mann has directed a number of critically acclaimed films, including Manhunter (1986), The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Heat (1995), The Insider (1999), Ali (2001), Collateral (2004), and Public Enemies (2009). He has also directed episodes of the television series Miami Vice and Crime Story.
