Bill Gates is an American business magnate, software developer, investor, and philanthropist. He is best known as the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation. During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of chairman, chief executive officer (CEO), president, and chief software architect, while also being its largest individual shareholder until May 2014.
Born in Seattle, Washington, on October 28, 1955, to William Henry Gates II, a lawyer, and Mary Maxwell Gates, a teacher, Bill Gates showed an early interest in computers. He began programming at the age of 13 and attended Lakeside School, a private school in Seattle, where he excelled in math and science. In 1973, Gates enrolled at Harvard University, where he met his future business partner, Paul Allen. Gates left Harvard in 1975 to start Microsoft with Paul Allen.
Under Gates's leadership, Microsoft developed a series of successful software products, including the Windows operating system and the Office suite of productivity applications. These products became essential tools for businesses and individuals worldwide, making Microsoft one of the most valuable companies in the world.
