Azim Premji Short biography
Azim Premji is an Indian business magnate, investor, engineer, and philanthropist. He is the chairman of Wipro Limited, a multinational IT consulting and system integration services company. Premji is informally known as the Czar of the Indian IT Industry.
Born on July 24, 1945, in Mumbai, India, Premji is a Gujarati Muslim. His father, Mohamed Hashem Premji, was a famous businessman in his time and was also referred to as the ‘Rice King of Burma.’
Premji obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He took over the family business, Wipro, in 1966 after his father's death. Under his leadership, Wipro transformed from a small cooking oil company to a global IT giant.
Premji is known for his philanthropic work. He has pledged to donate the majority of his wealth to charity. In 2010, he signed The Giving Pledge, a campaign encouraging wealthy individuals to donate at least half of their wealth to charity.
Premji has received numerous awards and accolades for his business acumen and philanthropy. He was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine in 2004 and 2011. He has also received honorary doctorates from several universities.
