Indra Nooyi Short biography
Indra Nooyi is an Indian-American business executive who served as the chairperson and chief executive officer (CEO) of PepsiCo from 2006 to 2018. She was the first woman to lead the company and the first woman of Indian origin to head a Fortune 500 company. Nooyi is known for her strategic leadership, her focus on sustainability, and her commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Nooyi was born in Chennai, India, in 1955. She earned a bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, and mathematics from Madras Christian College and a postgraduate diploma in management from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. After working in India for several years, she moved to the United States to pursue an MBA at Yale School of Management. After graduating from Yale, Nooyi worked as a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton and then as a marketing manager at Johnson & Johnson.
In 1994, Nooyi joined PepsiCo as senior vice president of corporate strategy and development. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming president and chief financial officer in 2001 and CEO in 2006. During her tenure as CEO, Nooyi oversaw a period of significant growth for PepsiCo. She also made sustainability a top priority for the company, setting goals to reduce its environmental impact and improve its social performance.
Nooyi retired from PepsiCo in 2018. She is currently a member of the boards of directors of Amazon and the International Cricket Council. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Business Roundtable.
