Ann Demeulemeester Short biography
Ann Demeulemeester is a Belgian fashion designer whose eponymous label is known for its avant-garde, deconstructed designs. She is considered one of the Antwerp Six, a group of influential Belgian designers who emerged in the 1980s.
Demeulemeester was born in Waregem, Belgium, in 1959. She studied fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, graduating in 1981. After graduating, she worked as a freelance pattern maker and assisted fashion icon Martin Margiela. In 1985, she launched her label, Ann Demeulemeester-Verhelst, with her husband, Patrick Robyn.
Demeulemeester's designs are known for their dark, minimalist aesthetic. She often uses black and white, and her clothes are often oversized and unstructured. She has been praised for her innovative use of fabrics and her ability to create stylish and comfortable clothes.
Demeulemeester has won numerous awards for her work, including the Golden Spindle Award in 1982. She has also been featured in numerous exhibitions, including a retrospective of her work at the ModeMuseum in Antwerp in 2011.
