Mario Draghi Short biography
Mario Draghi is an Italian economist, academic, banker, and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Italy from February 2021 to October 2022. Before he was appointed Prime Minister, he served as President of the European Central Bank (ECB) between 2011 and 2019. Draghi is widely credited with saving the euro during the Eurozone crisis of the early 2010s.
Draghi was born in Rome in 1947. He studied economics at the University of Rome and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After working as an academic economist and a World Bank official, Draghi returned to Italy in 1991 to become Director General of the Italian Treasury. He held this position until 2001 when he joined Goldman Sachs as a managing director.
In 2006, Draghi was appointed Governor of the Bank of Italy. He served in this role until 2011 when he was appointed President of the ECB. During his tenure at the ECB, Draghi oversaw the bank's response to the Eurozone crisis. He is credited with implementing several policies that helped to stabilize the eurozone economy, including the ECB's quantitative easing program.
In 2021, Draghi was appointed Prime Minister of Italy. He led a coalition government that included parties from both the left and the right. Draghi's government implemented several reforms, including a major overhaul of the Italian justice system. However, Draghi resigned in October 2022 after losing the support of a key coalition partner.
